Artist name: Te Rangitu Netana
Story Behind: Te Rangitu Netana, a Maori tattoo artist, was inspired by the life of one of his ancestors and by Maori culture to create this scarf design. An owl, the messenger that travels between the material and spiritual worlds, rises above four walls that mark out a house, the tribe’s meeting place. To the north are svmbols of knowledge and connection to the sky, to the south creation and water, to the east light and the giant eagle on which the Maoris travelled. To the west, the tears of the albatross express the sufferings of this people. The central circle represents a giant octopus, a symbol of navigation, and its tentacles, the eight points of the Maori compass, in a living crossover of cultures.
